Right at the edge of town, when driving the short distance from Karawatha Cottages into McLaren Vale, is where you find the Serafino complex, with reception centre, hotel rooms plus their cellar door and restaurant.

The obvious drawcard could just be the James Halliday 5 star rated winery, but the quality of the food in the Serafino Restaurant, recently awarded with a hat by the AGFG (Australian Good Food Guide), is without doubt deserving a visit in its own right.

Now there is one minor call-out that we should make: as said before, both the cellar door and the restaurant are part of a larger complex, with the reception / small conference centre and the hotel units. And that’s unfortunately what we think it feels like when getting into the restaurant: just another hotel restaurant, with a lack of ambience and atmosphere. But granted – I may be biased here, after many years of business travel with lonely late-night dinners in hotel restaurants.

But, lets forget about this and trust me, you will – once the food arrives and your attention focuses on the great food and wines on hand. The quality and preparation of each of the items we have tried has been simply outstanding, only matched by the presentation, with each and every item looking impeccable.

Whether it was the little appetizer to start with from the kitchen, the duck breast green curry or the braised kangaroo tail and beetroot gnocchi – either one of those was amongst the best dishes we have ever had. And to finish off, go for the signature ‘smoked chocolate mousse’ … sounds odd? Well it actually is still smoking when brought out to the table and certainly creates a bit of excitement.

To finish, the service throughout our last visit was super attentive, friendly and competent. Being there for dinner, the cellar door was obviously closed but, and that certainly should be one of the perks dining at a restaurant within a winery, the staff allowed us to sample a few wines before deciding on a bottle for the evening.

In short, at Serafino McLaren Vale you may not find the most beautiful ambience but the food and wines are absolutely stunning and definitely makes this a repeat fine dining destination for us.

And as a guest of Karawatha Cottages, you will be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival at Serafino.
