Even after having been at Pizzateca many times now, I am still surprised and instantly feel transposed to Italy when turning the corner on their driveway and the restaurant comes into view. I am actually not sure why that is – the building doesn’t look Italian at all and the large gum trees don’t fit either, but believe, it is the outdoor dining area, the simple chairs & tables with always a hustle and bustle around, music playing and the smell of pizza in the air that must do the trick.

A friendly welcome from the staff, an old Vespa truck and the open kitchen with the woodfired oven in the background all adding to the appeal – but the main reason for coming to Pizzateca is obviously the pizza. And again, it’s truly Italian here – watching the chefs flinging the dough through air to get to perfectly round shaped pizza bases; thin and crusty when they come out of the oven with a very traditional staple of topics – but also always a few seasonal specials on like the fig and gorgonzola pizza for example being one of our favourites.

The pizza are pre-cut and designed to share (but they are very particular at Pizzateca that the pizza is eaten the Italian way …. with knife and fork and definitely not with fingers) and you can just order your pizza as you like or trust the team and choose one of the “feed me” options. Big plus here is that when having a gluten free pizza you hardly notice that it is gluten free, with the dough being as thin and crisp as the regular pizza and not soggy as it is so often the case.

Pizzateca is owned by V. Mitolo & Son and their wines are available, as are a few other Australian wines – plus an Italian prosecco and beer, but no Italian wines which would be nice for change.
Important also that V. Mitolo & Son and Mitolo Wines may be hailing from the same family, but apparently there is not much love lost between the two and you definitely won’t get the Mitolo Wines at Pizzateca.

There is one other Italian tradition that is being kept alive at Pizzateca --- at the end, after asking for your bill, you will be offered a glass of their home-made and absolutely delicious Limoncello as a digestivo. On the house – after all, you are part of the family now.

And then there is one more reason these days to call into Pizzateca: Gelateca

Their newest addition is an icecream bar or better said Gelateria. And oh my god, that must be the best icecream we have ever had ... and now have been back already a couple of times just for the gelato. A definite must do if you have a sweet tooth
