Five O'Clock Somewhere

It is almost embarrassing that it took us a few months to realize that the old Mr. Riggs and Zonte’s Footsteps cellar door next to the McLaren Flat General Store is no longer standing empty, but is now the home of the Five O’Clock Somewhere wine bar (or wine room, as they call it).

Exciting we thought, and it got even better after we stopped one afternoon on the way home from one of our bike rides for a glass and we noticed that not only do they have a very extensive list of regional wines (all McLaren Vale, with a few Adelaide Hills wines) in addition to their own wines (Loom and 5OS Project – you can read all about this on their website), but they also offer food (not shown on their website).

And having a enjoyed an absolute marvelous Loom SVX Blewitt Springs Grenache on that visit, we just had to come back with friends and test the food.

And what a great experience that was: as said, food is tapas style smaller plates, with a couple of mains also available - but it really all about sharing.

Ortiz white anchovy on toast, mushroom skewer with chili shallot pickles, crab sliders and so on – all beautifully prepared (and catered for our gluten-free companion) and absolutely delicious.

Perfect for a lighter lunch or a casual evening – with plenty of great wines to choose from … and really close to your McLaren Vale accommodation at Karawatha Cottages.

We can only highly recommend and will definitely be back soon.
