Latest Covid-19 Information for McLaren Vale

31 May 2020

We sort of can’t hear the word “unprecedented” any more, but it is unfortunately true – these certainly are unprecedented times and the situation keeps on changing. We have therefore created this page to provide you with the latest information available to us and to keep you up-to-date on how this impacts McLaren Vale and  Karawatha Cottages.

During the past few weeks, we had plenty of time up our sleeves and whilst we rather would have welcomed guests and shared our little piece of McLaren Vale heaven with you, we opted for the second best and worked on the property.

From planting just close to 50 new native bushes and trees throughout our gardens and the forest, to finally getting to work on our long-time planned veggie patch, to completing a bit of “isolation renovation” in the cottages. Kitchen bench-tops and our recycled hardwood vanity tops have been sanded and re-sealed, cottage decks are oiled, the combustion heaters (and flues) cleaned and ready for winter, and an array of other little odd jobs completed.

Good news is that restrictions for travel within South Australia have further been eased, we have completed and implemented our COVID-Safe-Plan and are ready to welcome you again to Karawatha Cottages and McLaren Vale; and so are many of our friends and partners  at local restaurants and cellar doors. who either have opened already or are getting ready to do so as we speak!

Restaurants and cafes are allowed to welcome guests again, still with limited capacity and a few restrictions (make sure to call and book in advance), but important for a wine region - alcohol can now be served again with meals. See our Restaurant section for details on individual restaurant opening plans and days.

And as of the 1st of June, cellar doors can open again for seated tastings. That will mean a few changes for some of the cellar doors, possibly we will see more of the structured tasting experiences - but those of you who have stayed with us already in the past know that this is actually the way we personally prefer our wine tasting experiences

We thought we keep this page here updated and list details similar to what we have done for restaurants - but there are just too many cellar doors and most are open now as of next week. Plus all recommend that you call ahead to book your tasting experience, given the limitations on number of guests they can host at any given time.

So come and treat yourself to a stay at Karawatha Cottages for a well-deserved change of scenery and some fresh air; enjoy our beautiful surrounds, go on a walk along our beaches, explore the Onkaparinga Gorge (the river is flowing!) – or follow our wine walk or our other walking recommendations, starting right at your cottage.

The autumn colours are just stunning at the moment.

And whilst here, support the local community by rewarding yourself with food from one of our many outstanding restaurants, be it by dining there or by ordering from their take-away or ‘heat at home’ menus – with almost all of them delivering right to your cottage.

You can find all restaurants that have opened again plus those offering take-away or heat-at-home menus on our Restaurant page; our suggestions for walks, beaches and day-trips on the Fleurieu Peninsula are listed on our Explore page.

Plus, for your extra peace of mind and to ensure your and our safety and well-being, we have also implemented the following additional measures:

  1. In addition to our usual full clean (we do always wipe all surfaces you may touch - including those you will likely never touch - always have and always will, irrespective of this crisis) we will not take guests 2 days prior & post your stay (1 day as of mid June), as an extra provision against surface spread; this also means that we can currently not accommodate any early check-in or late check-out requests

  2. Our personal welcome has been reduced to a minimum, ensuring physical distance - or if you wish to do so, you can self-check in, without any interaction with us; we have added most of our personal recommendations to our Explore page already and continue to expand those of the next few weeks

  3. Special 'peace of mind' cancellation provisions (see T&Cs below)

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call at anytime.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

We are looking forward to welcoming you soon to Karawatha Cottages.

Friederike & Georg
